The Springboks completed another European rugby tour unbeaten and the Wallabies won three straight tests for the first time in a year in autumn internationals on Saturday. Meanwhile, Argentina halted its worst losing run by defeating Italy 19-14 in Rome, and Romanias bid for an unbeaten year was ruined in its final game in Bucharest by Fiji, which triumphed 23-7. South Africa celebrated its first win over France in France since 1997 after a gutsy 19-10 result. The Springboks made a perfect start with JP Pietersen dotting down barely a minute in from his chargedown of scrumhalf Morgan Parra. Left winger Yoann Hugets try just before halftime gave the French hope after they trailed 13-0, but the Springboks never looked like being overtaken and had two tries ruled out for knockons. Only penalties were added in the second half. "What makes this team special is that guys really step up if they need to. You win these games by being mentally very tough and struggling through," Heyneke Meyer said. He coached South Africa to 10 wins out of 12 this year, losing only to the All Blacks. They compounded Frances dismal season with an eighth defeat in 10 tests. "Were not at their level yet," France coach Philippe Saint-Andre said. "Were still missing that little bit extra." Australia shrugged off a troubled build-up and the absence of key players to scrape past Scotland 21-15 at Murrayfield. Coach Ewen McKenzies plans were disrupted by suspensions and injuries but the Wallabies patched-up backline scored tries through fullback Israel Folau in the first half and winger Chris Feauai-Sautia at the start of the second, with Christian Lealiifano booting the rest of the points. The Scots, looking for a third successive win over Australia, were only 13-12 behind at halftime thanks to Greig Laidlaws unforgiving boot and were never more than a converted try in arrears after the break. But a familiar lack of cutting edge out wide proved their undoing. "Im sick of being good losers," Scotland coach Scott Johnson said. Argentina could thank Nicolas Sanchez for helping to end its eight-match losing streak. Sanchez hit three out of four goalkicks plus a dropped goal to pass 100 points in tests for the Pumas, while Tommaso Allan, making his first start for Italy, nailed only three out of eight. The lead changed five times and both teams scored a try. But even after conceding 16 penalties, the Pumas prevailed again in Italy, where they havent lost for 15 years. Romania had won nine matches and drawn one this year but were undone by the Fijians, who scored three tries to a penalty try. In Tbilisi, Georgia beat Samoa 16-15 for the first time. A week after losing to the United States by a last-minute penalty, Georgia won with an injury-time penalty by Merab Kvirikashvili. Samoa scored two highlight tries in the first half, including a 30-meter solo effort past four defenders by flanker Jack Lam, but they couldnt shrug off the Lelos and suffered a fourth straight loss, and third on its European tour after falling to Ireland and the French Barbarians. Also, Japan hammered Spain 40-7 in Madrid, Canada handled Portugal 52-8 in Lisbon, and the United States topped Russia 28-7 in London, after which USA Rugby chief executive Nigel Melville called the lack of a live webfeed of the match disappointing, and promised the Eagles would not play in Europe "where we cannot get an appropriate feed." "Im proud of the way Im playing just now, because I had to do a lot of work to get back to where I want to be," Murray said after celebrating with his teammates on the red clay court in a temporary stadium in left field of the downtown home of baseballs San Diego Padres. Off-Season Game Plan looks at what the Blue Jackets may do to build upon last seasons success to return to the playoffs again next year.NEW YORK -- CC Sabathia is scheduled for season-ending surgery on his right knee next week, ending any hope of him returning to the New York Yankees ravaged rotation this year. Sabathia will have surgery Wednesday, and general manager Brian Cashman said he thinks "in theory" the big left-hander will be ready for spring training in February. But there is no guarantee Sabathia will be able to pitch effectively next season. "Given obviously the number of things that have gone on, well have to be careful with him," Cashman said Friday. "Hopefully next year will be a different story." The team all but ruled out Sabathia returning in 2014 after he had a setback early this month while he was on a minor league rehab assignment. He was hit hard July 2 in an outing for Double-A Trenton and woke up the next morning with swelling in the knee joint. One positive is that Sabathia, who turns 34 on Monday, will not have microfracture surgery Wednesday, which would require a longer recovery. Cashman said it will be an "arthroscopic debridement" -- basically, a cleanup procedure. The six-time All-Star and 2007 AL Cy Young Award winner has been out with a degenerative cartilage problem in his right knee since mid-May, when his ERA reached a career-high 5.28. "The rehab side of it which he went through, if you had three different options, that was the least," Cashman said. "Now were on the middle side of this thing, which is a cleanup of the knee, and hopefully thats good enough." The operation will be performed by Los Angeles Dodgers head physician Dr. Neal ElAttrache. Sabathia also had surgery on the knee in October 2010 to repair a small meniscus cartilage tear. After signing a $161 million, seven-year deal with the Yankees as a free agent before the 2009 season, Sabathia had his contract extended in 2011 by one year and $30 million. Making $23 million this season, Sabathia is scheduled to earn $23 million in 2015 and $25 milllion in 2016.dddddddddddd. The Yankees have a $25 million option on his deal for 2017 with a $5 million buyout. In other news, designated hitter Carlos Beltran was activated Friday from the seven-day concussion list. He batted sixth in the opener of a three-game interleague series against Cincinnati and hit an RBI single in the third inning. Rookie ace Masahiro Tanaka, sidelined with a partially torn ligament in his right elbow, wont begin a throwing program until hes pain-free. The Yankees hope he can avoid Tommy John surgery and return in September. Tanaka had a platelet-rich plasma injection. "Theres treatment, protocols, and when hes symptom-free hell start a throwing program, which obviously leads to bullpens, batting practices and hopefully rehab games. All of that has to happen without issue," Cashman said. "I know hes feeling better, but he doesnt feel symptom-free." Michael Pineda (right shoulder muscle injury) is throwing "very well" in Florida and the Yankees hope he can come back in August, Cashman said. The injuries to Sabathia, Tanaka, Pineda and Ivan Nova (season-ending Tommy John surgery) have left the third-place Yankees without four-fifths of their opening-day rotation. Hiroki Kuroda is the only one left, teaming with David Phelps, newcomer Brandon McCarthy and rookies Chase Whitley and Shane Greene to fill out a makeshift unit. Beltran was hit in the face with a ball that caromed off the batting cage July 9 in Cleveland and broke his nose. He said he was never told by a doctor that he had a concussion, but the Yankees were concerned and wanted to make sure he was OK. The club opened a roster spot for Beltran just before the All-Star break when right-hander Bryan Mitchell was optioned to Double-A Trenton after Sunday nights loss in Baltimore. The Yankees also announced they will honour captain Derek Jeter during a pregame ceremony Sept. 7. Jeter is retiring after the season. ' ' '
