As a deadlock in CFL labour negotiations stretched through this past week and so much rhetoric and brinkmanship made a work stoppage seem unavoidable, it was surprising when sources confirmed to TSN that progress in talks between the CFL and the Players Associations were moving quickly Friday and into Saturday. Neither side would publicly confirm or deny any discussions were taking place, until the near unexpected happened. On Saturday night sources confirmed to TSN, the league and players agreed to terms on a new, tentative CBA, pending ratification by the unions players. A league source confirmed the CFLs board of governors must also ratify any potential agreement. Neither side would confirm specific details of the tentative deal, but sources confirmed constructive movement toward a deal started Friday. After TSN Insider Dave Naylor confirmed earlier in the week that players on seven of the leagues nine teams had voted in favour of strike action, and with strike votes set to take place in Calgary and Edmonton Saturday, sources told TSN “back door” discussions through an appointed mediator began Friday morning. Ideas and proposals were passed back and forth without acrimony and without talks breaking down. By Friday night, during a Players Association conference call, a tentative deal began to take shape. The league would hold firm on a $5 million salary cap (2013s salary cap was set at $4.4 million) increasing $50,000 a season, and would not budge on its threshold to renegotiate the salary cap in the third year of a new CBA, set at an aggregate revenue increase of $27 million from the previous year. But the ratification bonus to players would increase to $7,500 for veterans and $1,500 for rookies. And with the union possibly controlling the disbursement of the bonus, and setting a scale for veterans, a six-year CFL veteran could potentially earn $12,000 if the CBA is ratified. The league minimum salary would also rise to $50,000, from $45,000 in 2013. A significant non-financial element also possibly included was the elimination of the option contract year for non-rookies. Sources said the term of the new CBA could be set at either four years, five years or five years plus an option to extend into a sixth season. The current CBA expired May 29, the same day talks broke down after the union countered a league proposal, which included a $5 million cap and $27 million threshold, with a $5.8 million cap and $12 million threshold to renegotiate the cap. The league also rejected another offer from the players earlier this week, which included $5.2 million cap and $18 million threshold. New, positive labour discussions continued into Saturday afternoon before a scheduled conference call between union executives and team representatives. A source close to the discussions said he felt “confident” a tentative deal would be reached by the end of the day, although conceded the debate amongst the players would be “vigorous.” After a four-hour call, the union agreed to take the deal to its players. A league source confirmed the board of governors ratification vote will take place “as soon as possible.” In a joint statement the league and Players Association emphasized: “Further details [about the agreement] will not be made public until these votes have taken place.” Wholesale Nike Zoom Cheap . According the CSNBayArea.com, the 31-year-old suffered an ACL injury in his right knee on Friday when he collided with Anaheims Emerson Etem during a pre-season game. The New Jersey Devils added a veteran scoring winger who has trouble staying healthy, but is coming off a terrific season. Numbers Game looks at the Devils signing Mike Cammalleri. The Devils Get: LW Mike Cammalleri. Cammalleri, 32, has been a productive goal-scorer, topping 20 goals six times in his career, but hes also had a hard time staying healthy, missing at least 15 games in four of the past five seasons. However, if a team understands that injuries are likely to be part of the package, they can also understand that a healthy Cammalleri has not only has he been able to score, but last season he was really effective as an all-around player, putting up strong relative possession numbers despite facing high-quality opposition and starting more of his shifts in the defensive zone. Those relative possession stats were dramatically better than previous seasons, so that doesnt necessarily mean thats his standard level, but its some evidence that Cammalleri is more than just a triggerman. Hes joining a Devils team that already puts up strong possession numbers, but has been unable to finish enough. For whatever it might be worth, Cammalleri is also 7-for-20 (35.0%) in shootouts over the past five years, and while thats a little above average, its miles ahead of what the Devils mustered as a team last year, when they were 4-for-51 (7.8%) in losing all 13 shootout decisions. While Cammalleri plays frequently on tthe wing, hes also played centre -- took the second-most draws on the Flames in 2012-2013 -- and that could be useful for the Devils, who are going to have to mix and match some pieces up front, but have enough to put together three pretty solid lines.dddddddddddd Adding a goal-scorer certainly addresses the Devils needs. They ranked 27th in the league with 2.40 goals per game last season, so adding a proven finisher is worthwhile. The trouble, as it often seems to be with the Devils, is that the term is steep for a 32-year-old. Maybe five years and $25-million is the going rate for what Cammalleri provides, but its hard to envision the Devils getting a positive return on investment when Cammalleri is 35 and 36-years-old. Sure, New Jersey has been getting great production from Jaromir Jagr and Patrik Elias, who are well beyond that age but, among 32 forwards who were at least 35-years-old last season, five managed to score more than 20 goals. The Flames will miss Cammalleri. They added Mason Raymond as a free agent, and Raymonds speed is an asset, but hes not the same kind of offensive threat that Cammalleri is, so its hard to expect that the Flames will thrive offensively without their third-leading scorer from last season.
